Songs Rhino loves, #120: Kool G Rap - “My Life”
I was fortunate to discover this bangin’ rap song in the first few days of 2024!
The first rap song I had never previously heard with which I have become obsessed in the year 2024 is this one, an excellent (and unusually catchy and tuneful, almost pop-sounding!) song by the great Kool G Rap. Here’s what I said about him when a friend of mine, a chap from the UK whom I’ll call Cornelius, asked for the don’s praises to be sung in one of his comment threads:
“I’m a huge Kool G Rap fan! It’s amazing to me that he was one of the first to set the standard for ingenious, brilliant, novelistic lyrics back in the late 1980s, and yet he’s still fuckin’ fantastic at rapping in 2024 at the age of almost 56 – he reliably spits his ass off to this very day.
He also sounds good next to almost anyone – Nas, Ghostface, AZ, Raekwon, Benny The Butcher, Freddie Gibbs, CL Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Freeway, Styles P, Nature, Joell Ortiz, Grand Puba, Vado, Maestro Fresh Wes, Papoose, Ransom, Masta Ace, 38 Spesh, Conway The Machine, Cormega, Anthony Hamilton, Vinnie Paz, Large Professor, Shotty Horroh, Talib Kweli, Che Noir, Rick Ross, Big Noyd, Q-Tip, Tre Williams, R.A. The Rugged Man, Masta Killa, Craig G, Bun B and Pimp C of UGK, Billy Danze and Fizzy Womack of M.O.P., Capone and Noreaga, the late Big L and Prodigy and Heavy D, and so many more!
G Rap is a legend among legends – Big Pun, may he rest in peace, was precisely right to kneel down and kiss his ring in the flesh when he had the chance. Mr. Wilson is one of the twenty or ten or even five greatest rappers of all time!”
